<image:title>Our story - Through Rivington we administer his wishes</image:title>
<image:caption>Mr William Charles Richmond-Pickering’s generosity allows Jersey residents of any age, gender or ability to follow their dreams in travelling to see art beyond Jersey and on the world stage, helping to support and strengthen the local cultural community. William himself was a traveller and art lover. Cuttings books from his travels and experiences can be viewed at The Jersey Archive and include cards, programmes, letters and tickets, cartoons, news cuttings, tickets, invitations, postcards, receipts and other souvenirs. The Rivington Fund is dedicated to upholding Mr Richmond-Pickering's wishes by administering this fund widely and fairly, enriching the lives of Jersey residents through the arts and history.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Process - There’s no time like the present…</image:title>
<image:caption>Join the dozens of Islanders Rivington has helped take cultural adventures abroad Once Rivington has met and considered your application, you will receive an email informing you whether or not your application has been successful. If your application is successful, you will receive an agreement outlining the terms and conditions of your funding. It is important that you read this thoroughly and understand what it all means before signing and returning a copy. We can explain anything that isn’t clear to you. We expect the conditions of the agreement to be honoured, the trip to be delivered as applied for, and for you to conduct a post-trip evaluation. Any changes or issues need to be communicated to us immediately, for evaluation. When you return your signed agreement, the funding amount will be paid by the Jersey Community Foundation. You must keep all evidence of expenditure (receipts), as we may ask to see it on your return. If you are successful you will be asked to provide certain materials and content that reflect on your trip, the process of applying and the difference the experiences have made to you. This will be in photographic, written word and where appropriate video. You can request to remain anonymous in your testimonial. If your application is unsuccessful, we will offer feedback and reasons for the decision. We don’t want you to be put off applying for the Rivington in the future and will be clear as to why you were unsuccessful. Good luck!</image:caption>

<image:caption>We support individuals, families or groups seeking funds for primarily one of these reasons: To broaden experiences of arts and/or history by travelling off-Island; To improve quality of life through art experiences specific to group or individual needs; To help people develop their cultural interests by attending arts and history events and venues.</image:caption>

<image:title>Guidance - Who we fund</image:title>
<image:caption>Those whose lives will be improved through culture Jersey residents; Those who have an interest in the arts, crafts or history; Those who require financial support to make such a trip possible. Those who have not travelled off-Island in the past two years for leisure. (TIP: Travel does not include essential travel such as work, education, medical, caring responsibilities, or visiting close family. This question is about whether financial circumstances prevent art, history or cultural trips.) WHAT OR WHO WON’T WE FUND? Those who don’t have a genuine need for funding; Applications without realistic or feasible plans; Trips that are not related to arts, crafts or history; Trips that have already taken place, or due to take place within 4 months of the deadline (trips can be planned further in advance, 4 months is just the minimum); Applications that cannot demonstrate potential benefit to the applicant; Trips which sit within longer travel plans; University or lengthy skills courses; Applications with unreasonably high-cost estimates; Trips with commercial benefit to a connected party.</image:caption>

<image:title>Guidance</image:title>
<image:caption>Before writing your application, please consider the following questions: Purpose, location and benefits. Why this location? Why this experience? Is a worthwhile trip itinerary planned? How much will this trip develop your skills and interest in arts, crafts or history? What other positive values and traits will this trip foster? Budget and finances. Is the budget reasonable and appropriate for the trip you’re proposing? Can you show a break-down of all the items? For example, which airline and accommodation provider? What measures will you put in place to manage the budget? Have you considered non-Rivington finances, such as personal spending money? Impact and testimonials. We will always encourage applicants to be open to sharing their trip’s experiences with us so we can share with the wider community and encourage even more Islanders to apply to Rivington. This can be in written word and photos or video. You may request to remain anonymous in your testimonial if necessary.</image:caption>

<image:title>Guidance</image:title>
<image:caption>Finally, please bear in mind three important factors that The Rivington Fund will take into account when considering all applications: How will you safeguard yourself? We’re interested in how you will ensure this trip is a safe, enjoyable experience. Have you considered what risks might exist where you’re going and how you plan to avoid or control them? How you will grow from this experience? We’d like to know how transformational and inspiring this trip will be. How will you build your passion from this experience? What’s the next stage? Any previous funding received? If you’ve already received trip funding from the Rivington, what was the impact of that funding? Did it make a positive difference in your life? Did you achieve what you told us you would achieve? How did it move your arts, crafts and/or history interest forward?</image:caption>

<image:title>Community Partners - Guidance for our partners.</image:title>
<image:caption>You understand your target community the best. Help to guide their experience. We are partnering with you because you understand the individual circumstances of people you support within and through your organisation, and can select or refer suitable candidates. Group trips can add extra benefits to a travel experience, however, you may wish to apply for an individual for specific support reasons. QUALIFICATION CRITERIA All trip participants must: be Jersey residents; have an interest in arts, crafts, and/or history, and if needed, be able to produce references upon request; be in need of financial support to make such a trip possible. PURPOSE The trip must have a clear, relatable purpose with full costs and itinerary researched. GROUP SIZE Group composition must address a number of factors: risk; support needs; care ratios; and practicalities of accommodation and transport. Your application may be extended to include support workers and/or those who form support networks for the principal beneficiary. CONSIDERING THE APPLICATION WITHIN GROUP SESSIONS Your application for trip funding must be duly considered by all the group’s participants, facilitated by the application author. Such discussions should take place prior to completing the application, to cover: the relationship between travel, the arts, crafts and/or history & your group; selection of location and trip purpose; group research, itinerary and detailed budget; how to be safe on this trip; following a successful trip, what does the group intend to do to evolve their passion for arts/craft/history? PLANNING THE TRIP Any plans should focus on a period 4 months following the submission deadline i.e. 1st February submission should plan for travelling in June or beyond. BUDGETS Your budget estimation will include all costs you will incur during your time away, for example, transport, accommodation, and entry costs. Please keep all evidence of spending (in the form of receipts); you may be asked to show this. If possible, applicants should be advised to have enough personal funds to complement the trip e.g. spending money proportionate to cost of living, emergency funds, etc. DATA-SHARING Please gain permission from trip participants to share their personal data with Rivington (and the Jersey Community Foundation, who provide administration services) before you submit the application on their behalf. COMPREHENSIVE RISK ASSESSMENT AND INSURANCE Rivington takes no liability for risk and therefore your risk assessment must cover all activity, travel and health risk, with appropriate mitigation and controls. Rivington cannot take responsibility for injury, damage, or loss that occurs during the trip. You must take out comprehensive insurance for the duration. Please get in touch if you require help on this topic. AFTER SUBMISSION OF YOUR APPLICATION You will be informed one month after the submission deadline of the outcome of your application. You may receive deferred, partial, or conditional approval. If the application is rejected you will be given clear rationale and feedback for future applications. If successful, a contract will be generated for you. Once this has been read, signed, and returned, funds will be paid into the account of your choice within 14 days. AFTER THE TRIP A condition of trip funding is for applicants to tell others of their experience, to inspire and generate many more applicants. This can take any format: video testimonials, written evaluation form, social media promotion, an in-depth report, community presentations or mentoring another applicant. The choice is yours, but please complete within two weeks of your return. REPEAT APPLICANTS Successful trip participants cannot attend another Rivington-funded trip in the same year, unless they are attending in a support capacity on behalf of others. We look forward to receiving your application. We know you’re planning something truly worthwhile, so tell us all about it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Testimonials - Having first heard about Rivington through social media posts Megan Woolsgrove applied for funding to travel to Cancun, Mexico to experience the art and history of the area. Specifically, the Underwater Museum of Art located in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, in the area surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and Punta Nizuc. She applied to do a short diving training course which would allow her to see the sculptures, specifically ‘The Silent Revolution’ and ‘Anthropocene' close to Isla Mujeres. She also took a snorkelling trip in the waters of Punta Nizuc to see the sculptures ‘The Muse of the Ocean, 'The Gardener of Hope,' ‘Reclamation,' and multiple others. Of the trip Megan Woolsgrove said “Experiencing the collection of sculptures situated in the Caribbean Sea has been an activity I wanted to do since studying Jason deCaires Taylor around 10 years ago. The museum has a total of 500 sculptures, by a series of international and local sculptors, with three different galleries submerged in the ocean at the Cancun National Marine Park. I am currently a Graphic Design masters student and have previously completed a degree in Fine Art. Experiencing the sculptures gave me inspiration for my university work centred around environment and forms. I have previously designed two photography books based on areas in Jersey. Travelling to Mexico provided me with a new environment and history to base my work around.”</image:title>

<image:title>Testimonials - Jax Quenault is a musical theatre performer. Acting and singing are their passion. They spend a lot of time listening to and watching recordings of shows and participating in local theatre and applied for funding to take a trip to London to experience the West End and the VA. They also wanted to provide some respite and an exciting experience for their mother. Of the trip Jax said "This was my first ever non academic or medical trip off Island, to tick theatre related items off my bucket list. Thanks to the Rivington Fund, I have been able to see my favourite show of all time, Newsies, upon its London premiere and it was everything I could have hoped for, leaving me definitely wanting to go back when I can afford it. The trip has inspired me even more to continue creating a local theatre group focused on putting musicals particularly, that put minority groups centre stage. As a theatre reviewer and content creator and aspiring performer and director, this trip really was invaluable to me, especially as due multiple cancellations when previously trying to go as I had insufficient funds. I am forever grateful to Rivington for supporting me to see these shows. I also loved going on a theatre tour, eating at the theatre cafe and the theatre diner, which were both filled with memorabilia, a soundtrack of showtunes, and singing waiters."</image:title>

<image:title>Testimonials - Amber Hahn is an artist in Jersey with an interdisciplinary practice that spans choreography, sound and sculpture. Research-led, she’s previously worked in collaboration with geologists, composers and chefs. Amber applied to Rivington to take a trip to Marfa, a small desert city in west Texas, which is known as a contemporary arts hub. She visited the The Chinati Foundation, founded by artist Donald Judd, which displays huge indoor and outdoor installations on an old army base. It is the site of the artist’s first large-scale architectural projects. Of the trip Amber said "The Rivington Fund has allowed me to strengthen my artistic foundation and pursue new material directions and spend time thoroughly developing multiple media and aspects of my work as they manifest in different forms; all the elements being of equal measure with respect to care. I anticipate that this experience will inform the production of new exhibitions, as well as the design and delivery of community projects and workshops that I’m developing as an Artist-educator."</image:title>

<image:title>Testimonials - In the summer of 2022 JAAR (Jersey Action Against Rape) used Rivington funding to take a group of their clients off-Island for a two-day pottery workshop at Penrhiw Pottery in Wales. The studio is run by a talented potter with over 25 years of experience and another who has more than ten years experience of working with adults teaching social and emotional skills through the medium of art and drama. One female survivor said of the trip "I don’t know where to start to say thank you. I wouldn’t have gone away this year if it wasn’t for this trip and nearly didn’t anyway through anxiety. This has been life changing for me, and to be away with such amazing people has helped. We all agreed it was such a support to meet others going through the same as we felt normal and could open up without any expectations. We all love those who support us, but there is a difference to those who truly understand and I can’t thank you enough for giving that to us."</image:title>

<image:title>Testimonials - Thanks to Rivington funding Jersey resident Vicky Hinault recently attended the Austin film festival's Screenwriters conference in Texas, USA. During the conference she attended a number of panels held by working screenwriters and filmmakers to learn and further develop her craft. This was the first opportunity since the pandemic she’s had to progress her writing projects. Of being successful in her application she said, “I'm so unbelievably grateful to The Rivington Fund for this opportunity. <image:title>Testimonials - Clare applied to Rivington to take a family trip with her son to Barcelona exploring arts and architecture. She said "My son and I had such a wonderful week in Barcelona made possible by The Rivington Fund. We stayed on the edge of the Old Town and spent a lot of time exporing as we walked through some of the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter and around La Rambla, some of which dates back to medieval times. We sampled some of the fabulous food in a market called La Boqueria, very colourful and lively. We visited the museum of contemporary art (MACBA), the Picasso museum where the collection was housed in 5 adjoining medieval palaces and included his early work from the age of 11, along with later prints and pottery. Of course Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, started in 1882 and still unfinished. To say it is an unconventional church would be an understatement! Amongst the bustling crowds we came across 3 talented street musicians. Two highlights for us were Gaudi’s Casa Batllo, a very eccentric curved house on 6 floors with a loft and roof terrace. Beautiful craftsmanship including wooden panels and tiling. The other highlight being the Joan Miro Foundation with a panoramic view of the city in the relaxing sculpture garden. Most of the collection has been donated from Miro’s private collection.” - Clare & her son applied for a family application for the their trip.</image:title>

<image:title>Testimonials - Mother and son Joanne & Joseph Fry are both passionate about history. They applied for funding to take a trip to Liverpool to visit the Liverpool Tate, the Maritime Museum, World Museum and the Museum of Liverpool which houses the history of Islam, a particular area of interest for them both. Joanne said of the trip "When I first heard about Rivington I didn’t think it would apply to me. My son and I adore history, but due to finances we were never able to do any of the things we wanted and they got put off year after year. But the application for Rivington was simple and I had lots of advice and guidance. I was so happy to be accepted and started planning straight away. I can’t thank Rivington Fund enough for giving me this opportunity to expand my knowledge and spend quality time with my son doing something we both love. Honestly if you love art / history, apply to the fund. It's a great resource open to everyone and operated by beautiful people." - Joanne Fry & Joe Fry, family application.</image:title>

<image:caption>The Rivington awarded funding to Youthful Minds, a group of young people aged between 11-25 who are working on a campaign to tackle and reduce the stigma associated with mental health for young people in Jersey. They applied for funding to take a group of 13 people on an arts tour of Edinburgh. Choosing the Scottish capital for its cultural breadth and density, the group explored mixture of painting, sculpture, music, theatre, literature, architecture. Youthful Minds said, “We are so grateful for the opportunity. Using art can support good mental health in many ways, particularly for young people. Some of the potential mental health benefits of creativity and art are increased self-confidence, self-esteem, finding a sense of purpose and meaning and a way of coping with difficult and distressing emotions. It’s our hope this trip will help young people reach their potential and empower them to move towards their goals and aspirations for the future.” - Youthful Minds charity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Testimonials - “Whilst I was a student studying architecture, the financial support offered by the Rivington was hugely appreciated, it enabled me to make two trips, one to Finland and the other to Japan. The first trip to Finland allowed me to study the buildings of Finnish modernist architect, Alvar Aalto, as well as traditional timber building techniques. The second trip to Japan offered an opportunity to explore the craft culture of Miyagi Prefecture, visit a collection of buildings in Tokyo and Sendai, and explore Higashimatsushima, the city where my student project for that year was located. Both were inspiring trips that helped to feed my creative interests and inject fresh energy and enthusiasm into my studies.”- William Le Gresley, Architect</image:title>

<image:title>Testimonials - “On two occasions the Rivington enabled me to pursue my research interests in the textile and folk culture of Romania and Japan In Romania, just after completing an MA in Textile Design, of particular interest were the Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest, and Maramures, a region in the north of the country known as the last countryside of Europe. In Japan, a few years later, highlights were the Tokyo Folk Craft Museum, visiting craft weavers in Niigata Prefecture, and an indigo farmer and dyer in Kyoto Prefecture. Through both opportunities I gained a wider understanding of textile cultures in these countries which continue to inform my current work as an artist and craft practitioner.”- Oliver Le Gresley, Artist and Craft Practitioner.</image:title>

<image:title>Testimonials - The Rivington Fund enabled me to follow an instinct to delve into the inspiration found in nature that artists, Frances Hodgkins and Dame Eileen Mayo, drew on throughout their careers. Another factor common to both, was travel, often during times of strife. I found myself in Aotearoa, otherwise known as New Zealand, ‘the land of the long white cloud,’ at the beginning of a worldwide pandemic. The exhibition of Frances Hodgkins’s work at the Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Puna o Waiwhetū, was breath-taking in its range. Since my return, I’ve embarked on new projects, digging deep into nature’s sources of pigments for dyeing, paints and inks. Foraging for supplies, hands in the earth literally, gathering materials. Last autumn I travelled again, joining an Erasmus funded project in Cyprus, that included the use of natural materials to make traditional crafts like weaving, and making pigments. Respecting cultures, and learning from them, is unlocking new ways of perceiving the world, through new eyes.”</image:title>
